Inland birds seen locally
The Turkey Vulture
The turkey vulture is one of the largest local birds. While some may think they are ugly, they are graceful in flight, while rarely flapping their wings, and they help clean up our roads and fields of dead carrion.
Redtail Hawk
The Redtail Hawk is a very prevalent hawk in our area. Another large bird, it can be seen on fence posts scouting fields for another "mousey" prey!
Viewing Areas near Bandon
Mourning Dove
You may hear the distinctive, plaintive call of the mourning dove before you actually see this handsome bird, but you'll surely recognize it strutting in front of you.
Canada Goose
The very large Canada goose is probably the largest of the geese that use our flyway. The spring and fall migration flocks (skeins) are very impressive indeed.
Our area also hosts flocks of the subspecies, Cackling Goose. This species is smaller than the Canada, but the markings are similar.
Coast birding sites
Brown Pelican
There will be times when flocks of these large soaring birds can be seen in the harbor or skimming just above the waves on the beach.
Bandon Marsh
Cowbirds
No, they don't always hang out with cows. They'll come to feeders, usually spring & summer. Another bird with a lovely voice!
