Birding at Face Rock Village
Birding at Face Rock Village
Our latest feature will offer pictures and some information about birds seen or heard at Face Rock Village. Over the next weeks and months we will continue to add to these pages.
The local birdlife is abundent indeed: from land birds to song birds, large soaring vultures, shore birds and offshore birds, birders from all over are attracted to our area, and Face Rock Village makes the perfect place to locate your birding experience!
I haven't seen the wood duck at the Village, but we have one visit our property near Langlois, so this species is around!
California Quail
There are coveys of quail in and around the Village. You'll probably hear their distinctive call before you see them race from one place to another.
Cedar Waxwings
One of our original Villagers, Paul, spotted a group of these very handsome birds landing in a thicket of willows one summer day. I was lucky enough to be visiting one day when he had his scope on his deck.
Since moving from southern California, Paul is becoming more familiar with our sea birds on and near Face Rock. We hope to get more contibutions from him soon.

Hummers
During the spring & summer, you're bound to see plenty of these industrious and busy birds. Some will even stay year-round if you put out fresh syrup in a feeder.
The syrup is easy to make: 1 part granulated sugar (no honey); 4 parts water; bring to a rolling boil for five minutes. Fill feeder when cool. Replace frequently, especially during the warm months.
Red-wing Blackbird
Another Spring-Summer bird around hear. Not only nice-looking, but a wonderful musical, gurgling song!
